I am sure that just like me you feel better after listening to your favorite song or tune. Music contributes to my well being and that is why I confirm that listening to music is part of my "Self Care". According to the psychologist Thomas Schaëfer music has more than a hundred functions, including giving meaning to one's life, forgetting one's problems, escaping, providing comfort, ...
On this international "Self Care" day, I wanted to share with you some of my favorites songs that I have been listening to lately and which are in my "self care" playlist as well as that of my collaborators.

The benefits of music
We recognize a lot the beneficial action that music has on us, that is why music therapy "the art of soothing and healing through music" consists in helping the person to feel better thanks to music. This type of therapy is starting to be recommended more and more in several areas.
However, it is not necessary to prescribe music therapy to everyone in order to realize the benefits of music. We only need to listen to music or songs to feel its benefits. Indeed, it has been shown that listening to music helps reduce stress and therefore can have positive effects on our well-being.
There are several styles of music that we could listen to depending on our mood of the moment. Sad or joyful music, each tune has its function. It is therefore possible to adapt our playlists to current needs!
I consider myself to be a music lover with quite an eclectic taste. I can listen to Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye, Prince, Gilberto Gill, Joe Dassin, Charles Aznavour, Sade, Earth Wind and Fire, Kool and the Gang, Al Jarreau, Dixie Chicks, Nora Jones, Stevie Nicks , Elton John, Bruno Mars, Talk Talk, Doobie Brothers, Christopher Cross, Heart, Pointer Sister, George Benson, Ella Fitzgerald, Youssou Ndour, etc.
It is above all the melody that turns me on but for you, it may be more the lyrics. Here is a list of my favorite songs I have heard recently as well as those of my collaborators, and they are essential to me for: relaxing, regaining energy, feeling good, moving or just thinking.
I call it the "self care playlist", you probably already know some of the songs or you will discover them.
Good listening !!👂🏾🎤🎼🎧
"Need an energy boost"
The energy boost, I often need it when I do my housework and lately, I listen to either Boléro de Ravel , Dave Brubeck Take 5 or Tiesto podcast.
I agree, it might sound weird to you as a choice, but I said I have an eclectic taste. Of course, I play loud music while doing my housework, which often tends to annoy my husband. I wonder if that's why he decided to hire a cleaning lady! Hum 🤷🏽♀️😉....
"Need to relax"
It is one of my favorite times, although now we have the choice of relaxing spa music or meditation. Lately, for me, nothing like listening to the song of Sade By your side . I grew up listening to Sade and even adopted her look for a while because I loved her so much.
Ali Farka Toure the whole album, I discovered it by chance while watching the movie "Unfaithful", it's always a treat to listen to it.
"Feel good"
- Sona Jobarteh - GAMBIA , I discovered Sona only a few months ago and I fell in love. I like to listen to his song when I'm feeling good.
- Shaka Kan - Aint Nobody, Listening to this song takes me directly to cloud nine.
"Need to move / dance"
- Gimms - Saper comme jamais ,I discovered him only a year ago and it seems that he is a hit in France. This song makes the whole house dance.
- Earth Wind and Fire - Boogie wonderland , We have even more fun listening to this song, I have several songs from EWF that I love but it will be for another time
"Need to think"
Lately, Nina Simone's songs have put me in this intense state of thinking which has a positive effect on my creativity.
- Nina Simone - Sinerman
- Nina Simone - New World Coming
As I said, I have a pretty eclectic taste and I love several styles of music: Country, jazz, blues, bossa nova, soul, R&B, Reggae, Afro beat, Salsa, House, the list is endless. But the ones I'm listening to right now are the ones I've just listed for you. I will write another post to share other songs and this will allow you to discover or rediscover some and extend your "Self Care" playlist.
I also wanted to leave space for my collaborators to share their favorite songs of the moment.

Hi everyone, when my friend Ella asked me to make a playlist of songs that melted me away, I felt like a black hole. It is really difficult to make a choice.
And then while chatting with Ella, there are a few songs from my adolescence that came back to me and that every time I listen to them either fill me with happiness, put me in a good mood, or make me nostalgic for a certain period of my life .
Here are the 3 songs that I chose:
The first is Booggie Wonderland from the group Earth Wind and Fire which dates from 1979. I chose this song because every time I hear it I want to dance, in addition I loved to see this group in concert.
The second song that puts me in a good mood is All night long by Lionel Richie which dates from 1983. It's a song that puts me in a good mood, and reminds me of summer every time I hear it.
And to finish, Ribbon in the sky by Stevie Wonder from 1982, it's a much calmer song, I love the melody on the piano, this song reminds me of a period of my adolescence when a friend gave me piano lessons without much result :)
So there you go my 'selfcare' playlist, I hope it will do you good too.

Being Afro-Caribbean, I sing during times of joy and sorrow. I sing when everything is fine, I sing when everything is wrong. I communicate in song. I am silent in song.
When I'm upset by social injustice, when I can't find the answers to my questions, I listen to « What’s Going on? » of Marvin Gaye.
When I’m full of energy and ready to take on the world. When I jog or exercise, I listen to "kompa kreyol". Above all, I listen to my band prefers Nulook by singer Arly Larivière. My favorite song is « Pa anmède’m » from his album of 2019.
When I want to be fair with myself in the silence and the secrecy of my being, I listen to
«I have Nothing » from Whitney Houston.
S.H. Nothing cheers me up more than singing while cooking and my favorite songs for doing so are cheesy '80s hits.
Here are three songs that come up often in the "self-care" playlist:
Fallen Angel - Alphaville (1984) Moonlight Desires - Gowan (1987)
Easy Lover - Phil Collins (1985)

It's not easy for me to choose just three songs like Ella demanded of us, but I tried and I chose:
Summer samba - Lisa Ono
Especially lately, I like to listen to his music when I need to relax. Her voice is warm and it suits the Canadian summer.
アイノカタチ - Misia
English lyrics:https://www.musixmatch.com/ja/lyrics/MISIA/%E3%82%A2%E3%82%A4%E3%83%8E%E3%82%AB%E3%82%BF%E3%83%81-feat-HIDE-GReeeeN/translation/english
I love her deep voice and I appreciate what I get when I listen to this song.
Shinzou wo Sasageyo par Linked Horizon - The attack on Titans season 2 - Opening officiel
I love this Anime "Attack on Titan [進撃の巨人]" and this music also gives me energy so I listen to it when I'm tired but also when I need to clean.

As soon as I wake up in the morning, I turn on YouTube on the TV and listen to music, a variety of music, for example: country, rock, pop, drunk, gospel, instrumental, etc.
It depends on how I feel. I like different singers and groups for example: Brian Adams, Def Leppard, Scorpions, Beatles, Air Supply, Lionel Ritchie, Micheal Bolton, Kenny Rogers, Tim MacGraw et Faith Hill, Foreigner, Blake Shelton, Céline Dion, Ginette Reno, The Gaithers, Elvis Presley, Keith Urban, Led Zeppelin, and more !!!
I also have a special love for Latin music. Such as meringue and salsa.
Sometimes it's the music, the rhythm that inspires me and sometimes it's the lyrics that touch me.
In short, music for me is good therapy. It lifts me up like ocean waves :-)
But here is my "self care" playlist of the moment:
- L’essentiel, Ginette Reno
- One moment in time, Dana Winner
- Winds of Change, Scorpions
- Humble and Kind, Tim Macgraw

As far as I'm concerned, there are only 2 songs that I'm listening to right now that are part of my "self-care" playlist.
The first is:
Thinking Out Loud from Ed Sheeran
The second is :
Lonely from Justin Bieber.
And you, what is your "self care" playlist?
I hope you will discover and add some of the songs to your "self-care" playlist.
"When you are happy you love the beat of the music. But when you are sad you understand the lyrics."
